The sample comes from an Israeli pop-star named Mike Brant, from his track "Mais dans la lumière." Brant's career came straight out of a dream. He was discovered, signed to tours and then discovered a second time as a solo artist. The track sampled was one of his many singles. He was so sought after that he was easily scheduled to play from audiences of 6,000-10,000.
After a suicide attempt, Brant pushed his live shows to the side to focus on a new album. After months of tireless effort on his second release, the artist finished his album. The morning his second album was scheduled for release, Mike Brant committed suicide by jumping six stories.
It's not my aim to depress anyone with this post. Throughout reading about Mike Brant & his tragic career, I was reminded of the scene in documentary Scratch where DJ Shadow talks about digging:
"You're looking through all theses records and it's sorta like a big pile of broken dreams in a way. Almost none of these artists still have a career, really. You have to kind of respect that in a way. I mean, if you're making records, if you're DJ'ing & putting out releases... you're adding to this pile whether you want to admit it or not. 10 years down the line, you'll be in here. Keep that in mind when you start thinking that 'I'm invincible' or 'I'm the world's best.' That's what all these cats thought."
